Election 2020: The latest updates
The nation is still awaiting the results of the presidential election after polls closed across America over 24
hours ago. Several states — including North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Nevada —
remain too close to call, with former Vice President Joe Biden securing the
states of Michigan and Wisconsin on Wednesday, per The Associated Press. The Trump campaign, meanwhile, has filed lawsuits in Georgia, Michigan and Pennsylvania, and said it would seek a recount in Wisconsin.
According to The Associated Press, the following states have been called:
President Trump (214
electoral votes):
- Alabama (9), Arkansas (6), Florida (29), Idaho (4), Indiana (11), Iowa (6), Kansas (6), Kentucky (8), Louisiana (8), Maine (1 of the state's 4 electoral votes), Mississippi (6), Missouri (10), Montana (3), Nebraska (4), North Dakota (3), Ohio (18), Oklahoma (7), South Carolina (9), South Dakota (3) Tennessee (11), Texas (38), Utah (6), West Virginia (5), Wyoming (3)
- Arizona (11), California (55), Colorado (9), Connecticut (7), Delaware (3), District of Columbia (3), Hawaii (4), Illinois (20), Maine (3 of the state's 4 electoral votes), Maryland (10), Massachusetts (11), Michigan (16), Minnesota (10), Nebraska (1), New Hampshire (4), New Jersey (14), New Mexico (5), New York (29), Oregon (7), Rhode Island (4), Vermont (3), Virginia (13), Washington (12), Wisconsin (10)
- Election officials in two of
Nevada's biggest counties now say, after seesawing back and forth
Wednesday about when votes would be reported, they will not have election
results until Thursday morning. (WSJ)
- Democrats are projected to retain
control of the House of Representatives. (CNBC)
- Democrat Gary Peters has held
onto his Senate seat in Michigan. (AP)
- Senate Majority Leader Mitch
McConnell of Kentucky won re-election as Republicans fight to retain their
majority. (NY Times)
- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also won re-election.
- Republican Susan Collins has
won re-election to the U.S. Senate from Maine, beating back a challenge
from Democrat Sara Gideon. (AP)
- Republican Lindsey Graham wins
re-election to the U.S. Senate from South Carolina, defeating Democratic
challenger Jaime Harrison in one of the most expensive Senate races this cycle. (AP)
- Democrat and former astronaut
Mark Kelly is projected to defeat Republican Sen. Martha McSally in
Arizona. (AP/ WSJ)
The state that matters most is Florida. If it reports its results on election night, as it well might, and if Joe Biden wins, then Mr Trump’s path to victory essentially disappears.
Former Vice President
Biden (264 electoral votes):
Note: Maine and Nebraska
split their electoral votes.
More election coverage:
Democrats are likelier
than Republicans to have voted by mail, so states that report in-person results
first, as Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, may initially show Donald Trump
leading.
