अगर आपने मेरे इस सवाल का सही जवाब दे दिया तो मैं आपको पानी पिला दूंगी. नहीं तो मैं पानी नहीं पिलाऊंगी.” बेचारा राहगीर उसकी बात का कोई जवाब नहीं दे पाया.तभी दूसरे राहगीर ने पानी पिलाने की विनती की.बहू ने दूसरे राहगीर से पूछा, “अच्छा तो आप बताइए कि आप कौन हैं?”दूसरा राहगीर तुरंत बोल उठा, “मैं तो एक गरीब आदमी हूँ.”सेठ की बहू बोली, “भइया, गरीब तो केवल दो ही होते हैं. आप उनमें से कौन हैं?” प्रश्न सुनकर दूसरा राहगीर चकरा गया. उसको कोई जवाब नहीं सूझा तो वह चुपचाप हट गया.तीसरा राहगीर बोला, “बहन, मुझे बहुत प्यास लगी है. ईश्वर के लिए तुम मुझे पानी पिला दो”बहू ने पूछा, “अब आप कौन हैं?”तीसरा राहगीर बोला, “बहन, मैं तो एक अनपढ़ गंवार हूँ.”यह सुनकर बहू बोली, “अरे भई, अनपढ़ गंवार तो इस संसार में बस दो ही होते हैं. आप उनमें से कौन हैं?”बेचारा तीसरा राहगीर भी कुछ बोल नहीं पाया.अंत में चौथा राहगीह आगे आया और बोला, “बहन, मेहरबानी करके मुझे पानी पिला दें. प्यासे को पानी पिलाना तो बड़े पुण्य का काम होता है.”सेठ की बहू बड़ी ही चतुर और होशियार थी, उसने चौथे राहगीर से पूछा, “आप कौन हैं?”वह राहगीर अपनी खीज छिपाते हुए बोला, “मैं तो..बहन बड़ा ही मूर्ख हूँ.”बहू ने कहा, “मूर्ख तो संसार में केवल दो ही होते हैं. आप उनमें से कौन हैं?”वह बेचारा भी उसके प्रश्न का उत्तर नहीं दे सका. चारों पानी पिए बगैर ही वहाँ से जाने लगे तो बहू बोली, “यहाँ से थोड़ी ही दूर पर मेरा घर है. आप लोग कृपया वहीं चलिए. मैं आप लोगों को पानी पिला दूंगी”चारों राहगीर उसके घर की तरफ चल पड़े. बहू ने इसी बीच पानी का घड़ा उठाया और छोटे रास्ते से अपने घर पहुँच गई. उसने घड़ा रख दिया और अपने कपड़े ठीक तरह से पहन लिए.इतने में वे चारों राहगीर उसके घर पहुँच गए. बहू ने उन सभी को गुड़ दिया और पानी पिलाया. पानी पीने के बाद वे राहगीर अपनी राह पर चल पड़े.सेठ उस समय घर में एक तरफ बैठा यह सब देख रहा था. उसे बड़ा दुःख हुआ. वह सोचने लगा, इसका पति तो व्यापार करने के लिए परदेस गया है, और यह उसकी गैर हाजिरी में पराए मर्दों को घर बुलाती है. उनके साध हँसती बोलती है. इसे तो मेरा भी लिहाज नहीं है. यह सब देख अगर मैं चुप रह गया तो आगे से इसकी हिम्मत और बढ़ जाएगी. मेरे सामने इसे किसी से बोलते बतियाते शर्म नहीं आती तो मेरे पीछे न जाने क्या-क्या करती होगी. फिर एक बात यह भी है कि बीमारी कोई अपने आप ठीक नहीं होती. उसके लिए वैद्य के पास जाना पड़ता है. क्यों न इसका फैसला राजा पर ही छोड़ दूं. यही सोचता वह सीधा राजा के पास जा पहुँचा और अपनी परेशानी बताई. सेठ की सारी बातें सुनकर राजा ने उसी वक्त बहू को बुलाने के लिए सिपाही बुलवा भेजे और उनसे कहा, “तुरंत सेठ की बहू को राज सभा में उपस्थित किया जाए.” राजा के सिपाहियों को अपने घर पर आया देख उस सेठ की पत्नी ने अपनी बहू से पूछा, “क्या बात है बहू रानी? क्या तुम्हारी किसी से कहा-सुनी हो गई थी जो उसकी शिकायत पर राजा ने तुम्हें बुलाने के लिए सिपाही भेज दिए?” बहू ने सास की चिंता को दूर करते हुए कहा, “नहीं सासू मां, मेरी किसी से कोई कहा-सुनी नहीं हुई है. आप जरा भी फिक्र न करें.” सास को आश्वस्त कर वह सिपाहियों से बोली, “तुम पहले अपने राजा से यह पूछकर आओ कि उन्होंने मुझे किस रूप में बुलाया है. बहन, बेटी या फिर बहू के रुप में? किस रूप में में उनकी राजसभा में मैं आऊँ?” बहू की बात सुन सिपाही वापस चले गए. उन्होंने राजा को सारी बातें बताई. राजा ने तुरंत आदेश दिया कि पालकी लेकर जाओ और कहना कि उसे बहू के रूप में बुलाया गया है. सिपाहियों ने राजा की आज्ञा के अनुसार जाकर सेठ की बहू से कहा, “राजा ने आपको बहू के रूप में आने के ले पालकी भेजी है.” बहू उसी समय पालकी में बैठकर राज सभा में जा पहुँची. राजा ने बहू से पूछा, “तुम दूसरे पुरूषों को घर क्यों बुला लाईं, जबकि तुम्हारा पति घर पर नहीं है?” बहू बोली, “महाराज, मैंने तो केवल कर्तव्य का पालन किया. प्यासे पथिकों को पानी पिलाना कोई अपराध नहीं है. यह हर गृहिणी का कर्तव्य है. जब मैं कुएँ पर पानी भरने गई थी, तब तन पर मेरे कपड़े अजनबियों के सम्मुख उपस्थित होने के अनुरूप नहीं थे. इसी कारण उन राहगीरों को कुएँ पर पानी नहीं पिलाया. उन्हें बड़ी प्यास लगी थी और मैं उन्हें पानी पिलाना चाहती थी. इसीलिए उनसे मैंने मुश्किल प्रश्न पूछे और जब वे उनका उत्तर नहीं दे पाए तो उन्हें घर बुला लाई. घर पहुँचकर ही उन्हें पानी पिलाना उचित था.” राजा को बहू की बात ठीक लगी. राजा को उन प्रश्नों के बारे में जानने की बड़ी उत्सुकता हुई जो बहू ने चारों राहगीरों से पूछे थे. राजा ने सेठ की बहू से कहा, “भला मैं भी तो सुनूं कि वे कौन से प्रश्न थे जिनका उत्तर वे लोग नहीं दे पाए?” बहू ने तब वे सभी प्रश्न दुहरा दिए. बहू के प्रश्न सुन राजा और सभासद चकित रह गए. फिर राजा ने उससे कहा, “तुम खुद ही इन प्रश्नों के उत्तर दो. हम अब तुमसे यह जानना चाहते हैं.” बहू बोली, “महाराज, मेरी दृष्टि में पहले प्रश्न का उत्तर है कि संसार में सिर्फ दो ही यात्री हैं – सूर्य और चंद्रमा. मेरे दूसरे प्रश्न का उत्तर है कि बहू और गाय इस पृथ्वी पर ऐसे दो प्राणी हैं जो गरीब हैं. अब मैं तीसरे प्रश्न का उत्तर सुनाती हूं. महाराज, हर इंसान के साथ हमेशा अनपढ़ गंवारों की तरह जो हमेशा चलते रहते हैं वे हैं – भोजन और पानी. चौथे आदमी ने कहा था कि वह मूर्ख है, और जब मैंने उससे पूछा कि मूर्ख तो दो ही होते हैं, तुम उनमें से कौन से मूर्ख हो तो वह उत्तर नहीं दे पाया.” इतना कहकर वह चुप हो गई. राजा ने बड़े आश्चर्य से पूछा, “क्या तुम्हारी नजर में इस संसार में सिर्फ दो ही मूर्ख हैं?” “हाँ, महाराज, इस घड़ी, इस समय मेरी नजर में सिर्फ दो ही मूर्ख हैं.” राजा ने कहा, “तुरंत बतलाओ कि वे दो मूर्ख कौन हैं.”इस पर बहू बोली, “महाराज, मेरी जान बख्श दी जाए तो मैं इसका उत्तर दूं.”राजा को बड़ी उत्सुकता थी यह जानने की कि वे दो मूर्ख कौन हैं. सो, उसने तुरंत बहू से कह दिया, “तुम निःसंकोच होकर कहो. हम वचन देते हैं तुम्हें कोई सज़ा नहीं दी जाएगी.” बहू बोली, “महाराज, मेरे सामने इस वक्त बस दो ही मूर्ख हैं.” फिर अपने ससुर की ओर हाथ जोड़कर कहने लगी, “पहले मूर्ख तो मेरे ससुर जी हैं जो पूरी बात जाने बिना ही अपनी बहू की शिकायत राजदरबार में की. अगर इन्हें शक हुआ ही था तो यह पहले मुझसे पूछ तो लेते, मैं खुद ही इन्हें सारी बातें बता देती. इस तरह घर-परिवार की बेइज्जती तो नहीं होती.” ससुर को अपनी गलती का अहसास हुआ. उसने बहू से माफ़ी मांगी. बहू चुप रही.राजा ने तब पूछा, “और दूसरा मूर्ख कौन है?”बहू ने कहा, “दूसरा मूर्ख खुद इस राज्य का राजा है जिसने अपनी बहू की मान-मर्यादा का जरा भी खयाल नहीं किया और सोचे-समझे बिना ही बहू को भरी राजसभा में बुलवा लिया.” बहू की बात सुनकर राजा पहले तो क्रोध से आग बबूला हो गया, परंतु तभी सारी बातें उसकी समझ में आ गईं. समझ में आने पर राजा ने बहू को उसकी समझदारी और चतुराई की सराहना करते हुए उसे ढेर सारे पुरस्कार देकर सम्मान सहित विदा किया.
